چکیده
The objectives of this study are to better understand controls on bed erodibility in muddy estuaries, including the roles both sediment properties and recent hydrodynamic history. An extensive data set measurements, properties, information was utilized create statistical models predict bed. This includes >160 eroded mass versus applied stress profiles collected over 15 years along York River estuary, a system characterized by “depth-limited erosion,” such that critical for erosion increases rapidly with depth into For study, quantified two ways: at 0.2 Pa (a commonly produced tides York), normalized shape profile stresses between 0 0.56 Pa. In as response variable, explanatory variables strongest influence were (in descending order) tidal range squared averaged previous 8 days proxy bottom stress), salinity or past river discharge, organic content, water level anomalies, percent sand, clay, layering. Results support 1) deposition disturbance increasing 2) cohesion/consolidation erosion/winnowing fines decreasing erodibility. most important variable influencing Pa, more (vs. less) erodible cases exhibited straighter strongly curved) profiles. Overall, best predictors which, turn, predictor shape. suggests calculations position salt intrusion can serve useful empirical proxies consolidation state resulting uppermost seabed estuarine numerical models. Observed content top 1 cm poor erodibility, likely because typical suspend less than mm sediment. Future field sampling would benefit from higher resolution observations within bed’s few millimeters.

Tidal and spring-neap variations in horizontal dispersion in a partially mixed estuary
[1] A sequence of dye releases in the Hudson River estuary provide a quantitative assessment of horizontal dispersion in a partially mixed estuary. Dye was released in the bottom boundary layer on 4 separate occasions, with varying tidal phase and spring-neap conditions. The three-dimensional distribution of dye was monitored by two vessels with in situ, profiling fluorometers. The three-dimens...
متن کاملHydrodynamic and Sediment Modelling within a Macro Tidal Estuary: Port Curtis Estuary, Australia
An understanding of sediment transport processes and resultant concentration dynamics in estuaries is of great importance to engineering design awareness and the management of these environments. Predictive modelling approaches provide an opportunity to investigate and address potential system responses to nominated events, changes, or conditions of interest, often on high temporal and spatial ...
متن کاملTidal Effect on Dynamics of Pore Water Nitrate in Intertidal Sediment of a Eutrophic Estuary
To evaluate the effect of the tidal cycle on the pore water nitrate dynamics in intertidal sediment, concentrations of inorganic nitrogen in water and sediment were monitored during tidal cycles in the mud flat of Tama Estuary, Japan. During submergence, nitrate concentration was highest in the overlying water and decreased monotonically with increasing depth in the sediment, suggesting that th...

The objectives of our studies in FY09 are to collect observations of currents, waves, and bathymetry on tidal flats, and to develop, test, and improve models for tidal-flat processes and for mud-induced dissipation of waves in shallow water. Specific goals relating to tidal flats are to: Investigate the relative importance to the circulation of riverine and tidal flows, and Estimate the bottom ...
متن کاملSeasonal and spatial variation in cohesive sediment erodibility in the York River estuary: physical deposition versus biological reworking
Introduction and Methods Cohesive sediments in marine and coastal environments are responsible for degrading water quality, influencing the cycling and availability of particle bound contaminants, and infilling navigable waterways. In spite of their significance to coastal environments, there are still major gaps in our understanding of many of the fundamental processes governing cohesive sedim...
